We are thrilled to be welcoming Asheville artist Deb Karash back to The Makery! Deb's work is known for its vibrant color and uniquely graphic design aesthetic, and this four day workshop is not only an opportunity learn her innovative method of adding color to metal, but also how to integrate technique and design.

In addition to sharing the nuts and bolts of her approach to coloring on metal, Deb will show us how to abstract images of birds and insects to create a composition highlighting color and pattern. She'll walk us through simplifying a design from an inspiration photo or sketch; how to plan for adding pattern and color by coloring on metal; and adding texture and dimension through the use of layers and rivets. We'll learn her special techniques for preparing the metal for the best and most colorful results, including the best way to achieve depth of color using layers and shading. We'll each get a one-on-one design consultation with Deb to make the most of our goals and ideas, as well as guidance about how to think through and plan for construction and assembly of our finished pieces. Additional fabrication techniques will be covered as time allows, but all levels are welcome - this is a great class for everyone from beginners to more experienced makers.

Ignite Jewelry Studio

Who doesn’t want to add a little color to their jewelry, or maybe your own patterns and images? This class focuses on my technique for drawing on metal with colored pencils. Learn to add color and excitement to your work with my special technique. This class meets for 4 consecutive Thursdays and you should finish at least one pendant, more if you have time to work outside of class or are an experienced metalsmith. Small class size offers plenty of individual instruction. Fabrication techniques will be covered as time allows. All levels welcome.

Jewelry Fabrication - Go beyond high polished surfaces and stones by adding interest with texture and patinas.  Learn how to join disparate surfaces and materials.  We will do lots of experimenting to find your favorite techniques.  Beginners are welcome but if you are a seasoned maker we will work on how to add something new to your style.  Bring your sketch pad because we will be working on design, as well. Students should leave with some samples and at least 2 finished pieces.  This is not a Prismacolor workshop.

Whether you want to go with flowers and leaves or bugs and birds, this is the class to take you there. Fantastical botanical creations are in your future. Of course color and pattern will be a big part of the class and you can go with a geometric design if that is your passion. There will be a $50 kit fee payable to the instructor at the time of the workshop.

While most traditional jewelry requires casting and soldering, jewelry can be made in a multitude of ways with a vast array of materials. You don’t always need a lot of equipment to make exciting jewelry. As we create a small body of mixed metal jewelry (earrings, pendant, cuff bracelet), commonly referred to as a suite, we will examine various ways to add surface interest and volume. Emphasis will be placed on creating well crafted jewelry pieces that relate to one another. Discussion will center on designing through simplification and abstraction and creating interest with volume and texture. Cold connections will be used to join metals and add in non-metallic materials such as fabric, plastic, wood, etc. No gold and diamonds in this class, we will be working in silver, copper, and bronze. I’m not saying we won’t be soldering but we will definitely be looking at other options. Expect to finish at least 3 pieces.

Improve your skills in this fun 2 day workshop. Add interest to your jewelry designs with surface texture, volume, and layers. Emphasis is placed on planning and finishing techniques in order to achieve a more professional look. You will learn easy soldering and riveting tips, how to incorporate found materials or beads, how to create a rich surface on copper and silver, and how to use commercial findings or make your own. Most students will leave with a finished piece. This is the perfect precursor to Deb’s Drawing on Metal workshop which will be offered May 4-7, 2023, at Sertoma Arts Center. A supply list will be sent out to registrants 3 weeks prior to the workshop. 2 sessions.

Advanced Drawing on Metal - Diane Wiemer Studio

Now that you have the basics of Drawing on Metal step it up in this advanced class. The coloring technique is the same but we will be pushing the design aspect of your work. This class focuses on more layers, multiple components, and additional materials. Whether you want to go with flowers and leaves or bugs and birds, this is the class to take you there. Fantastical botanical creations are in your future. Of course color and pattern will be a big part of the class. There will be more individual attention in this class with one on one design consultations. In this 4 day class you should finish one piece.
